Full Moon in Scorpio

May 14, 2014.  This month the Sun is in Taurus, so the Moon is in the opposite sign of Scorpio. These two signs are not as different in meaning as one might at first assume. Taurus is an earth sign and deals with practical issues including the things we want to manifest in our lives. Taurus loves the material world and experiencing it with all five senses of taste, touch, sight, smell, and hearing. Taurus appreciates things that are solid and lasting and have practical purpose, so it is understandable that this is the Sun sign that oversees the physical labor that goes into the creative act of planting the fruits and vegetables that we will harvest later in the fall.

The Full Moon is in Scorpio, a water sign associated with the unstable, passionate, transformative and taboo energies that run beneath the surface of our world. These energies often stay locked in dark places since their sudden eruption can disrupt the smooth surface of our life with an emotional tsunami caused by an sea-quake or volcanic eruption. Scorpio also wants to manifest, but on an emotional level where it can have deep connections, intensity, and passion.Plow

The place where Scorpio Moon and Taurus Sun connect is through the surface of the earth. Taurus is visible above the earth with its fertile fields and lush harvest. Scorpio is invisible below the earth, in the molten lava and dark unexplored crevices.  The earth is the ground that both separates them and holds them together.

One action on which Scorpio and Taurus agree is the act of plowing. Taurus likes it because plowing is necessary to sow the fields with seeds for the next harvest. Scorpio likes it because plowing a field  brings the things that are underground up to the surface. Plowing the soil adds depth and fertility to the fields, guaranteeing a more abundant harvest.

For You: To chose which seeds to plant you must first figure out what you wish to harvest. Don’t just grab any old seeds that happen to be close at hand. Really take some time and think this through. Plowing, Planting, and Harvesting a field is a lot of work. Be sure that you end up with something worth the effort and that will give you pleasure in tending and pride in harvesting. As you plow you will find stones and rocks and other hard objects that get in the way of your planting. This is like when you dig into the life experiences of your past and you find many hard places that have been obstacles in your path. Seeing these hard places can be difficult and painful.  Scorpio is saying that you can’t ignore the dark hard places. But Taurus is reminding you that you can’t stay too long looking at the pains of the past or you could stay forever lost in the underworld, adrift in the river Styx. When an old hard rock of the past comes to the surface while you are plowing your field, pick it up, look at it and toss it to the side and keep working. Don’t let it take you away from your task of growing your life. You may find that you uncover enough stones that you can build a rocky wall around your field, turning what your thought were weaknesses into strong protection.

Full Moon in Scorpio April 25-27

These beautiful images capture the essence of Taurus and Scorpio. Taurus the Bull represents solid grounded earth energy. The Sun is in Taurus every year in late April when the earth become fertile and life creates anew. Taurus is about creating things of substance that we can count on. Taurus energy is determined and patient, willing to wait for the seeds to grow and the new life to sprout.

Scorpio is the opposite energy from Taurus. While Taurus wants to create, Scorpio wants to destroy. While Taurus wants the simple pleasures of a good life, Scorpio wants to seek the mysteries and delve into the depths of the unknown.

The Scorpion stinger is always ready to strike, and death is just a moment away. This push towards death and the underworld is not because there is anything essentially vicious about Scorpio. It is just the nature of life to transform and to push to deeper levels. Scorpio moves silently beneath the ground of the Taurus bull, who is unaware that the solid life he is building is threatened by forces that are unknown and unknowable.

This month the Full Moon seeks to find a balance between the forces of creation and destruction, between life and death. It seeks to find the pivot between building up and tearing down, between providing a teat for milk that can heal and a stinger that delivers toxins that can kill.

Katniss from The Hunger Games

The Full Moon in Scorpio is a powerful place. It combines the nurturing quality of the Moon with the fierce and unforgiving energy of Scorpio. Artemis represents the Moon as a strong female, at home in nature and confident within herself. We can see a modern interpretation of Artemis in the portrayal of Katniss, the main heroine of The Hunger Games.  Katniss has an integrated balance between yin and yang. She carries her bow and arrow and is a fierce and skilled warrior, but she kills only to protect those she loves. Her goal is not to win for personal glory, but to save her family and friends. There is even an Apollo figure in her close companion Peeta, who is engaged in what could be seen as more yin pursuits. He is a baker, a cake decorator, and when called on to protect himself, he uses his skill of camouflage and disappearance. He is an artist who is motivated by love and devotion as he finds his way through the game of life. This movie that pits violence, superficiality, and oppression against values of love, family, and sacrifice has struck a note in our national psyche. The combination of balanced masculine and feminine energies create the shift that Katniss and Peeta’s society so desperately needs. This is a modern day myth, pointing the way to our own personal and societal transformation so that we might never see the fractured world of The Hunger Games.

To Do: This entire weekend, from Friday to Monday morning, will be filled with the light of the Moon. During this weekend try to slow down. Take deep breaths, engage in your body, eat more mindfully, let others go in front of you in line, and allow yourself time where you have no agenda. Imagine that you are in a perfect place of balance; not a static rigid place that you need to defend, but a flexible, moving point of balance that rises and falls like the ebb and flow of life. When you find that place of balance within yourselves you can find a way to be a creative, musical, healer who is in touch with your inner knowledge. When you find that place of balance you are powerful, clear, and directed, taking aim with intention to bring your goals into manifestation. You might be thinking that such balance is too much to hope for. But in fact, it is the natural order of things. Day and night find their moving point of balance, Sun and Moon dance through the month as they come close and then move apart again. Life is always changing. Take this Full Moon as a time to slow down, and participate in the flow of life

During this Full Moon you have the opportunity to find the union between Scorpio Sun and Taurus Moon. Scorpio pushes to the surface a desire for meaningful transformation. Connected to the underworld by its association with Pluto, Scorpio has the heat of deep volcanoes and molten lava. This is the energy we are harnessing now at the Full Moon. This is the fire of passion that heats the crucible and brings the opposites into union. This month you can unite the opposing forces with your passionate desire for a better world.

The Full Moon is in Taurus. An earth sign, Taurus reminds us of the value of realistic appraisals and practical action. It is the ground upon which we walk, the earth upon which we live, the soil and water from which we produce. Taurus the Bull is patient, but powerful. It stands its ground until threatened, and then it charges, full force, into action. Right out of nowhere, things change. Taurus is reminding us to pay attention. Notice what is really happening, be aware of the truth of the matter. Taurus is providing us with the container, the crucible, for our transformation. Taurus has alerted all the earth creatures to help us in shifting our consciousness so that we see the bigger picture, and acknowledge our responsibility is not only to ourselves, but also to the next seven generations

New Moon in Scorpio Wednesday 3:56 pm

Today is a New Moon, and what a New Moon it is!! Not only are the Sun and Moon in the water sign Scorpio, but Mercury and Venus are also swimming around in the deep mysteries of the psyche. The New Moon each month is a reminder that you can always begin anew. With all this Scorpio energy charging things up, this new beginning might seem connected to something in your past that no longer serves you. It is a time to begin looking deep within to find the root causes of things that are bothering you. It is a time to delve into your psyche, remember incidents from the past, and recall memories from childhood. Look particularly at how you communicate (Mercury) with those you love (Venus). Pay close attention to your dreams over the next few nights. You may gain an insight into some old pattern that you have been repeating that has been holding you back. I know for me, I am working on being less critical of those I love. I am working on keeping my mouth shut and my heart open.  You may discover that changing old patterns from your past will bring an opportunity for you to move more fully into your future.

Journal: Dream of Me and my Shadow

The days have been cloudy and I have hardly seen the Moon in the night at all. Then last night I awoke at 2 am to discover the Full Moon shining in all her brilliance. I thought of my Shadow, which I had been pondering the last few days – my inner boogey man that keeps me in fear. As I looked at the Moon the thought came to incubate a dream that would help me understand my Shadow more. So I said to the Moon and myself: “I’d like a dream so that I can see my Shadow and understand its place in my life.”  I then went back to bed, and awoke an hour later, adrenaline rushing from a very scary dream. Here is what I dreamt:

It is night. I am part of a group being chased down by horrible people. These people are amazingly cruel and use blasts of fire to destroy everything. (note: I had just watched Lord of the Rings trilogy and the fierce war scenes). I am so frightened. I am hiding out, running from hiding place to hiding place in total fear. These horrible people completely destroy one place and then move on to the next place to annihilate. But they keep a few people behind to finally destroy anyone who comes out of hiding once they leave. There is no safety.  I run into my brother Tom who takes me into a house that just been raided and escaped destruction. He felt safe there since the destroyers had moved on. I am still fearful, knowing they leave single destroyers behind. I look out a window and I see a man outside on a large construction vehicle driving round and I suspect he is a destroyer. Tom does not seem concerned. But I decide to hide underneath a blanket so I can not be seen. My dog curled up around me.

Scene shifts:  I found my other brother Jack. I told him about these horrible people destroying everything but he didn’t believe me and wasn’t taking any precautions at all. I freaked out in fear and he pushed me aside and he almost struck me, stopping just in time. He seemed barely composed, full of unreleased anger. He handed me a note that was written by his Boss which said Jack had a terrible temper and needed to bring it under control or he’d lose his job. It was like Jack was proud he’d gotten his anger under control, even if just barely. He and another guy got in Jack’s car, I got in the back seat, which was only an unsecured lawn chair and we drove off. I was keeping an eye out for the destroyers since they could be anywhere (note: I had just seen the Matrix, where the agents can show up at any point). I saw a police car , which I suspected could be a destroyer, and warned Jack about that. But he was arrogant and had no concern. I could only hope he knew what he was doing. He said, “I hear you have a dog” and I said “Yes, If you want I’ll show it to you.” That is when I woke up and the dream ended.

I won’t try to interpret this dream now, but want to share the insights that came to me as I woke up through the rest of the night. I thought of how full of violence and fear this dream was. So, this is some indication of the intensity of my Shadow. I am currently studying Carl Jung’s Red Book and I think of Carl Jung and how some people think he was psychotic based on his fantasies like those he wrote about in his journals. Yet, someone like Tolkien who wrote Lord of the Rings and used his imagination to write arguably one of the most vicious and violent books ever written, is considered a great genius. Why is one person’s (Jung’s) violent fantasy considered psychotic and another’s (Tolkien) is a great expression of creativity? Is it because Tolkien projected his fantasies of violence onto the “other” while Jung kept his focus on himself? I thought of how many films are based on the Shadow. In Lord of the Rings, Tolkien even refers to the “shadow” in that Sauron, the Great Deceiver is covering the world in”shadow,”and the Sun is not seen any more. Harry Potter is all about facing the Shadow figure of Voldemort.

As I lay in bed after this dream I felt uneasy, almost afraid, as if this dream was true and I was in danger. But then I realized that the Shadow is not real, in the sense that it has no real substance. The Shadow is an interior creation built by the discarded garbage of the Ego – a conglomeration of all guilt, fear, rejection, and violence. It is not any one thing, but a combination of things. The Shadow is amorphous, shifting in form, hard to pin down. It is like a Kaleidoscope of dark fragments, bits and pieces of the rejected self. And like a Kaleidoscope it changes patterns and forms, never exactly the same way twice. This is why it is hard to get a handle on the Shadow, hard to really understand it. Because once you think you have it, it changes and slips away. This shape-shifting quality of the Shadow helps me understand it, and helps me get some perspective on it. It is not like a demon who lives inside of me, just waiting to be released. The Shadow has no substance. It is more like a wisp of fog, an ever moving darkness; hence the very appropriate name given to it by Jung — The Shadow.

Full Moon in Scorpio

The Moon represents our unconscious, feelings, and intuition. It is the part of ourselves that is in the dark and hidden from our conscious mind, which is represented by the bright and penetrating Sun. During a full moon the Sun and Moon are opposite each other in the sky, and the bright light of the Sun is reflected off the surface of the Moon, creating a luminous glow that is bright enough that it illuminates the depths of night so we can see what lies within our psyche and stirs within our soul.

With the Moon in Scorpio, (opposite the Sun in Taurus) we have the opportunity to illuminate the darkest and most hidden depths of ourselves, the part that Carl Jung called the Shadow. The Shadow is made up from the parts that we don’t want to acknowledge. It is our failure, our fears, our insecurities, our mistakes, injuries, illness. and pain. It is everything that the Ego doesn’t think belongs in the more perfect world of its creation. So, the unwanted garbage of the Ego gets buried, deep, hidden and out of sight; it becomes the Shadow. We can even forget the Shadow exists, just like the US did with Bin Laden. It was too damaging to acknowledge that he could still be out there, so we downgraded him to a symbolic threat, a powerless fugitive on the run. But the truth with Bin Laden, as the truth in us, is that just because we want to pretend the Shadow doesn’t exist and has no power, doesn’t mean it’s true. If we don’t acknowledge that the Shadow exists we tend to project it outward, and put our fear and shame onto other people. Instead of acknowledging our fear of the elusive Bin Laden, we put fear on Muslims in general, or dark skinned foreigners. But the fear really lives within ourselves, always under the surface, waiting.

This Full Moon in Scorpio on Tuesday May 17th at 7:09 am EDT is an opportunity to illuminate that which would normally be left unseen. This stark and powerful image represents to me the meaning of this Full Moon in Scorpio.  Striped bare, it hold just the essentials. Everything is clear in the light, the raven watches over a landscape of red, a color that eludes to the battles that have gone before. An intelligent scavenger and carrion bird, it senses where the bodies are buried. It is fearless in uncovering them. The pure truth of our hidden fears is exposed. It is brought up to the light, to be dealt with and healed. Our Shadow might even be sent into the watery depths of the ocean to be reabsorbed by the collective psyche for regeneration and renewal.

This Full Moon in Scorpio is a perfect time to face your fears and acknowledge your hidden Shadow. Take some time to really ponder what it is that you fear; what it is that you avoid; what do you hate; how do you hold yourself back; what inner messages keep you paralyzed; what makes your anger explode; what causes you to shut down and withdraw.  Ask yourself, or those close enough to you to tell you the truth, what part of yourself you have buried. Realize that those are the part of your Shadow that are holding you captive, keeping you from being fully free.

Often people don’t really want to discover their Shadow, and avoid dealing with it at all. But, that is really impossible, since it is always creeping around in the psyche, causing trouble in your life. This wonderful image is by Carl Jung as he was exploring his inner life and finding his Shadow. He used a process he called Active Imagination, which is like dreaming while awake. He would talk to the different parts of himself and try to understand the workings of his mind and soul. I often find my Shadow in dreams, sometimes as a figure clothed in a dark cape, just on the edge of darkness. You can work with your dreams to find out about your Shadow. I also love film, and so many good movies deal with facing and overcoming the Shadow, including Star Wars (Darth Vader) and Lord of the Rings (Sauron). Even just watching those movies can be cathartic and illuminating. Take time to journal and be honest with what is hidden within yourself. For in doing so, you will find a hidden jewel that can be acknowledged, brought into consciousness, and reintegrated.

New Moon in Scorpio

Saturday November 6th the Moon becomes new in the sign of Scorpio. The emphasis on Scorpio energy is very strong now, which means it might feel like volcanoes are erupting all around you. Along with the Sun and Moon, we also have Venus and Mercury in Scorpio. Venus has been retrograding in Scorpio. Retrograding is like walking backwards, so you might be thinking about issues and people from your past.  Don’t be surprised if you start to dream about old lovers, or have old emotions triggered in such a way that you feel the hurt all over again. Friends and lovers might contact you from out of the blue providing you with opportunities to reconnect, or perhaps to heal what still hurts.

I think it is very symbolically significant that during this Scorpio energy we really do have volcanoes erupting all around. Mount Merapi is erupting right now in Indonesia with over 100 people reported dead. For more about this devastating eruption read National Geographic. But it doesn’t end there. Indonesia reported rumblings at 21 other volcanoes, which is more than double the number usually active at one time. This is making experts wonder why there is such an increase in volcanic activity in the Ring of Fire, a string of faults in the Pacific. Some speculate that tectonic plates are realigning and that volcanoes can effect one another. Even a volcano in Iceland is beginning to stir.

Isn’t that just the way it is in our emotional lives? When the parts of ourselves that we keep buried in our psyche start to rumble, it really does feel like tectonic plates within ourselves start to shift. Our whole world can start to realign, and one old memory or event can trigger another, leading to volcanoes,  earthquakes, and tsunamis. The tsunami in Indonesia last week wiped out two islands leading to over 430 dead, and it occurred on the same fault line that caused the 2004 tsunami that killed 230,00 in a dozen countries.

I don’t think you have to worry about destruction of this magnitude in your own life. But it does point to the depth and intensity of our inner core, our psyche that often lies hidden within, until something triggers an eruption. This is what Scorpio can be like when the energy of the psyche is ignored and pushed down. But there is also a tool for Scorpio energy that can avert disaster, and that is Psychology and other similar processes that bring an increase in your self knowledge and a deeper understanding of your psyche. Take the time to explore your fantasies, fears, passions, and old wounds to that you can bring them to the light with consciousness and some control. One really good way is to start to watch your dreams, which are like a direct connection to the deeper realms of yourself. Begin a dream journal now and begin a dialogue with yourself so that when one volcano explodes in your life, you don’t start a chain reaction.

Sun enters Scorpio

Get ready for a shift in energy as the Sun moves from Libra to Scorpio at 8:35 am on Sunday October 23rd. From the relationship oriented Libra, we shift to the intense, passionate culmination of what relationships have to offer, for good or bad.

Each zodiac sign is ruled by a planet which colors the qualities of that sign. Scorpio is ruled by Pluto, god of the Underworld. Scorpio wants to know what lies deep within the shadows of your psyche, the secrets in your heart, and the longings of your body. Because it is through these truths that real change occurs, even if it stings. It takes a powerful and clear will to direct the emotional force of Scorpio so that it  brings a positive and rejuvenating  transformation, not destruction.

This image of Pele, the Hawaiian Volcano Goddess signifies much of what I think about Scorpio. She lives deep in the mountains, her energy is the watery lava, powerful, hot, turbulent, increasing in tension, building in force. This force can be used for good, as it is in Iceland where the volcanic heat furnishes warmth for homes and hot tubs. Or Scorpio can hold onto its tension until it blows and everything around it is destroyed, as in Mt. St. Helena. But even then, new life is coming out of those ashes. This leads us to another of Scorpio’s  symbols, the Phoenix Bird, who burns to death in its own nest, only to be reborn from its ashes.

When the Sun enters Scorpio on Sunday we will have four planets in Scorpio including Sun, Mercury, Venus, and Mars. I’ll write more about this on my Changing Sky and Blog section of my website www.laishley.com

Mercury enters Scorpio

Mercury just entered Scorpio. And that makes three planets now under the influence.  In addition to Mercury, the planets Venus and Mars are also in Scorpio.
