Healing Arts Bring Balance between Your Body, Mind, Spirit, & Soul

The Hopi have a word, Koyaanisqatsi, that means “Life out of Balance.” I believe that one of the biggest reasons that people are unhappy, unmotivated, and unfulfilled is because they are living out of balance. I have a holistic view on health and healing, which means that we experience life in four different spheres of reality – Body, Mind, Spirit, and Soul. People tend to be very strong in several of these spheres, and often weak in at least one.

For example, Thomas was an excellent lawyer and was very happy at work where he was intellectually engaged and well paid (so he is strong in Mind and Body). But he lived alone, had few ways to find inner peace, and was longing for a loving relationship (weak in Spirit and Soul). Thomas was out of balance.

The goal with Healing Arts is to bring Thomas into balance. He comes into balance by finding his Center, which means that he is connected to his inner core, his Spirit, however he understands that term (Carl Jung referred to this as the Self). From his Center. Thomas can learn to move between his four spheres, maintaining those that are strong, and building up the areas that are weak. In this way he comes into harmony within himself.

When we are wounded by life, we are wounded on many of these different spheres and likewise we need to heal on these different levels. Counseling often focuses on gaining an intellectual understanding by figuring out why problems occur. Through this understanding we then strive to change the behaviors of our Body and the thoughts of our Mind, disengaging them from the rut in which we are often stuck. This is important work, as our behaviors and thoughts color our perceptions of the world and need to be brought under control. But healing also needs to occur in the Spirit and the Soul.

I have found that one of the biggest problems my clients exhibit  is an imbalance between their Mind and their Soul, also known as their Head and their Heart, their Left Brain and their Right Brain. Today’s society is moving so fast, with so much technology, instability, and stress that the Mind is over-stimulated. The non-stop inner dialogue that we all have (which Eckhart Tolle calls the Conditioned Ego) is taking over, turning our experience of reality into a mere commentary. The Soul, the maker of magic and mystery, is languishing. I believe it is essential to put our attention to strengthening our connection to our Soul. The Soul is our direct link to Spirit, so when you strengthen one, you strengthen the other.

The Healing Arts are ways in which you can strengthen your connection to Spirit by building up your relationship with your Soul. Speaking the symbolic language of Astrology and moving with the natural rhythms of the Sun and Moon are two very important Healing Arts. Listening to the messages of your dreams, using guided imagery, visualizing symbols, and engaging in ceremony are a few more.  I encourage you to take the time to build the most important relationship you will ever have – the relationship with your own Soul.
